A Postscript on JSC Radio Ep. 80

PHILADELPHIA (JSC) — When I first started doing JSC Radio nearly 2½ years ago, I often pictured the podcast — which was, essentially, an extension of this blog — to be a sounding board for not just me, but for interesting and compelling people. In the 90+ shows I’ve done, counting the “Best of” shows and special episodes, I have had a number of great conversations. Ranging from the early episodes where I interviewed Jenee Darden, Lara Witt, and Adrienne Lawrence to the two appearances by Jazmine Duke (including Ep. 61.5, where she and her dad made a tandem appearance) to my interview with the dynamic Renee Washington. This show has been a slow burn and a slow build but every episode is worth it.

That brings me to Episode 80. The 80th Episode of JSC Radio morphed from being a milestone episode (every 5 shows is a damn milestone) to being my favorite overall episode of this show since I started doing it in 2016. I’m a competitive dude. I’m constantly trying to improve upon things and get better, and I felt a lot of that played a role in how well this turned out. But that podcast was nothing without those two dynamic women.

Where the hell have I been in 2018?

PHILADELPHIA (JSC) — What’s Good Y’all. I hope I remember how to do this.

2018-05-04 09.47.28To say that 2018 has been a god-damned adventure is putting it mildly. It’s been one of the weirdest years of my nearly 39 years of life. I can say — without question — I have had more “WTF” moments (both good and bad) than one man should have as an adult. It’s been nuts. I’ve also noticed that it’s been three months since I posted anything on this page. I even fell behind on posting updates on JSC Radio! That’s how wild, stressful, and weird that 2018 has been. Some of this, you guys know about, and I won’t rehash it here. A lot of it you don’t so I’ll explain here.

If you haven’t noticed, this post is going to be very unfiltered and uncensored. At this point, if you’re jarred by a few dirty words, you can leave now. I sincerely no longer care at this point. Either you like me or you don’t but you’re reading one way or the other.

JSC Radio Ep. 65: Flipping The Birds

PHILADELPHIA (JSC) — This was a hell of a week to be in Philadelphia.

What up doe, People! This has been a hell of a cool week here in Philly to be honest. This week’s episode — another landmark at No. 65 — hits on the aftermath of the orgasm of happiness that was the Philadelphia Eagles winning the Super Bowl.

As I’ve said multiple times the last few weeks, Philadelphia is a different kind of place when it comes to their sports teams — particularly the Eagles. The Eagles are to Philly what the Red Sox are in Boston, the Cubs are in Chicago, the Saints are in New Orleans, and…yes…the Lions are in Detroit.

eagles-nick-foles-td-superbowl-gty-hb-180204_4x3_992
This No. 9 found a way to take command and win big games for the Eagles.

The Eagles last won an NFL Championship in 1960, predating the Super Bowl by seven calendar years. They wouldn’t reach their first Super Bowl until after the 1980 season, where they got laid out by the Raiders. It would be almost 25 years before they got back to the Super Bowl, where they lost to the Patriots in Jacksonville. The Lombardi Trophy, much like it is in Detroit, was an obsession in Philly. It was the holy grail. It was the Precious. Well, last Sunday, the Eagles obtained the Precious. And they did it in a way that few would’ve ever figured, especially after Carson Wentz’s knee went kaboom on Dec. 10 in Los Angeles, with lightly regarded journeyman Nick Foles out there throwing flames like he grabbed a Fire Flower and a pissed off defense. This week’s show talks about the Eagles influence on the city, the wild celebrations/riots that soon followed, the epic parade featuring one of the greatest promos every by Jason Kelce, and why these Eagles have all the things the Lions wish they had.

Plus, the NBA trade deadline basically turned into the Great Cleveland Massacre.

Here’s Episode 65. Let’s Have Some Fun, y’all.

  • The NBA Trade Deadline came and the choppa started singing in Cleveland..

JSC Radio Ep. 63: Birds of a Feather

PHILADELPHIA (JSC) — And I thought last week’s show was tough…

So, for the sake of clarification: This show was recorded on Wednesday night. It was a few hours after Larry Nassar was sentenced,  about 36 hours after Joel Ferguson’s horrendous interview on WVFN in Lansing, and it was recorded as Lou Anna Simon resigned as MSU’s President.

It was recorded before this thing went straight up nuclear the last 18 hours with the “retirement” of Athletic Director Mark Hollis and before the release of this monstrous piece from ESPN’s venerable Outside The Lines on how MSU’s lax response to sexual violence spans decades and stretches into the basketball and football programs, including details that show that both of MSU’s legendary coaches — Tom Izzo and Mark Dantonio — allowed this crap to happen knowingly on their watch. In no uncertain terms, this is a f–king disaster on all levels. An unmitigated debacle. As recently as this morning, you had a high profile donor saying on record that if people are wary about sending their kids to MSU that they can “go to another school” because there are “kids on a waiting list” dying to get in. Oy.

JoelFerguson
Joel Ferguson. The face of the MSU response to Larry Nassar. That’s not a good thing.

For so many years, I have seen people at other schools such as Penn State, Baylor, Ohio State, and others say asinine to downright offensive things in the midst of a scandal, but rarely have I see a more idiotic and tone deaf collective response to a major crisis than what I have seen at Michigan State the last two weeks. They couldn’t have handled this any worse than they have if they tried. It makes it all the more astonishing since MSU has one of the premier Public Relations programs in the country and has top notch PR firms associated with them.

So keep that in mind as you listen to this show because so much has gone down in just 24 hours that it makes your head spin. I attempted to lighten the mood and talk about the Super Bowl too. So, there’s that.

MattieLarsonStatementMuch like last week, this show will be graphic. There will be strong language and it features the victim statement from Mattie Larson, the former US Olympian who was assaulted multiple times by Nassar. She was giving this statement as Ferguson was making a fool of himself on the radio.

Here’s Episode 63.

JSC Radio Ep. 63 Blog BannerComing up on Episode No. 63 of JSC Radio:

  • Larry Nassar gets sent to Hell
  • The response by MSU to this travesty has been nothing short of a disaster.
  • You hear the real time reaction to the resignation of Lou Anna Simon.
  • Mattie Larson’s gut-wrenching victim statement sent shockwaves through us all.
  • Joel Ferguson’s horrendously offensive interview may have been the “inadvertent” tipping point in all of this.
  • Where does Michigan State University go from here?
  • Plus: A breakdown of the NFC & AFC Title games, the greatness of Merrill Reese, and how it feels to finally have a Super Bowl team in my literal backyard.

JSC Radio Ep. 39: Genuine Draft

PHILADELPHIA (JSC) —  Welcome back to the Mothership, everyone. After being preempted last week due to my work at the NFL Draft here in Philadelphia, The People’s Podcast is back with a little bit of the fun of the draft — including a lot of boos from the Philly faithful, a heartfelt and profane promo from a 1st round pick, and some A+ Heel work from Roger Goodell and Drew Pearson. I also make fun of the Fyre Festival, plus a dose of reality as racism once again barges into the room during a sporting event as that good ol’ fashioned 1940s style racist behavior once again rears its ugly head in Boston.

Remember, JSCRadio is on SoundcloudiTunesStitcher Radio, and Google Play! The show is also on Twitter at @JSCRadio! Also, as you’ve seen on the JSC Radio page, we’re now up to 39 full episodes — hitting another Milestone next week! Going forward, expect there to be an update every week when a new show drops — usually, but not always — every Thursday.
