JSC Radio Ep. 61.5: I’m Black & I Have A Dad

PHILADELPHIA (JSC) — What’s Happening People! The Cause Speeds on Its Way and it’s been a minute since I’ve dropped a “.5” on you, but this was too good to get crammed into one show.

Initially, I had planned on this being the bulk of Ep. 61, but, because of #Lions, there was no way that I could give this interview its proper justice by having it tied to Jim Caldwell. Ep. 61.5 needed to stand on its own.

This week, we welcome JSC Contributor Jazmine Duke back to the show. She made a very notable appearance on the show a year ago and this time she’s back with her father, Aaron, with whom she co-wrote a book called I’m Black and I Have A Dad. She has also previously written on this site on Father’s Day last year, telling a story about how her dad legit saved her life

Aaron Duke, is more than Jazmine’s dad. He’s a retired U.S. Marine, a self-made man, and after listening to this show, you will see where Jaz gets it from in terms of their raw and outspoken nature. The interview is nearly an hour long and if you’re one of those people who pucker up at the talk of racism and sexism…then you need to grow up and put on your big boy pants because it’s gonna get woke in here.

Coming up on Episode No. 61.5 of JSC Radio:

  • Jazmine and her Dad recount life in Minnesota including chopping wood and laying sheet rock.
  • How did an old school Black Marine raise a Feminist?
  • How the fight for gender equality and racial equality go hand in hand.
  • On the advice he gave Jazmine as a young girl.
  • Despite their really tight bond, they don’t agree on everything.
  • What it was like being the product of an interracial relationship.

Thanks for Everything (So Far…)

PHILADELPHIA (JSC) — Hey Now. What Up Doe, y’all.

I wanted to to write this to personally thank you for being so supportive of me and JSC throughout 2017. We just finished another insane year and I couldn’t have made it through without you. So, Thank You. Dammit, thank you. It is greatly appreciated.

JSC Illingsworth Big LogoThe toughest part of doing all of this is that it’s been a titanic feat getting support — both financial and emotionally — for the work that I do. It’s HARD, y’all. So I’m also writing this to let you know that your support has not been in vain. Little by little between here, Instagram, and my page on Patreon, the show has slowly gained a foothold. For that, I am definitely appreciative.

The reason I started the Patreon page was as a way to give back to fans and supporters who were willing to put their literal money where their mouths are. The money itself helps keep JSC Radio and THIS Website alive (i.e. paying for upgraded equipment, paying for the website subscription, the Dropbox and Adobe subscriptions, buying a mixer and new mics, etc.). Well, very soon, the fruits of that labor will start to come to fruition as I will be getting a new mixer and at least one new microphone for better sound quality.

Your continued support made this happen and will make things such as a second mic — which would make in-studio and more face-to-face interviews possible — the next move as this year rolls on. Again, THANKS TO YOU! Y’all are awesome.

I wasn’t joking. That battery been gone.

Going forward, the next major goal is to get a new computer. I’ve joked about it a few times in blogs on this site, in person at seminars, and on the show, but I seriously do this from an Apple Mac Book that I bought when I started graduate school nearly a decade ago. To give you an idea of how old this computer is: the battery basically gave out four years ago. Apple no longer makes replacements for it. Therefore, this thing must stay plugged in at all times and it moves as slowly as an old Windows PC on dial-up at times, which makes for even longer nights editing shows and getting new stuff out to YOU. There’s a reason there’s often a bit of a lag time between when shows hit Soundcloud, iTunes, Audioboom, etc. and when a blog hits here. The shit literally takes hours to do because of the computer.

So going forward the rest of the year, look for an even bigger push for Patreon and Sponsors because I would really like to turn this old computer into something new that will help me get better content out to you faster.  I want you to continue supporting JSC because it is definitely working, but also I could always use more help.

I have hundreds of likes on the Facebook Page — which is amazing — along with nearly 3,000 followers between the two handles on Twitter. But I have the damndest time getting some of these page views and downloads up. So what I’m saying is that if you support me and this show, I need y’all to be vocal about it. Be loud. It’s cool. How do I know what to keep doing if you’re not saying anything?

So feel free to drop this site’s link in your social media and as well as a link to the Patreon Page (which, by the way, if you aren’t a Patron, you should be) on your social media and help get the word out for me. The more people I get, the more money comes in, and the more great stuff I can give back to you.

Plus, if you have a business or nonprofit that could use some promotion, let’s work something out. I’m trying to help you build too.

Feel free to support this show by subscribing, sharing links, giving me a rating and a review on Apple Podcasts, Google Play, and/or Stitcher and telling others as I continue to build this thing.

In closing, I wanna once again thank you for being brave enough to take the leap and support JSC. Look for the Return of #JSCWOW as well as I need to get back to dropping these gems on you too. Thank you for everything in 2016 and 2017. Let’s build in 2018.

Until Next Time, That’s The Way It Is. Wednesday, January 3, 2018.

Take Care, God Bless, Always Dare to Be Different, and G.O.M.A.B. Σ

JSC Words of Wisdom #7: On Awards and Being Ready for Success

PHILADELPHIA (JSC) — Good Friday morning, Everyone! It’s time, once again, for the JSC Words of Wisdom, a.k.a. #JSCWOW. As always, this will drop every Friday morning, more often than not, at 6:00 am Eastern Time. Feel free to share this on your favorite social media outlet with the hashtag — #JSCWOW.

For this week’s Edition: The last couple of weeks have been very good to your boy. In my industry, award season has come and gone and — for the first time — I managed to take home a pair of awards (literally, I took them back home with me to Detroit) and it got me to thinking about how as much as I talk about success and all things surrounding it, this was one of the first tangible monuments to it that I’ve received in years. It got me to thinking about how I — and you — and Get Ready for Success. So wake up. Smell the #covfefe, and get these words of wisdom! Updates: JSC Radio Ep. 39, The NFL Draft, and a last word on Ep. 38.

unspecified-1PHILADELPHIA (JSC) —  What’s Up y’all! So you likely noticed that Ep. 39 of JSC Radio didn’t drop this week. My sincerest of apologies are in order for that. The reason there was no show this week is because, if you haven’t been paying attention, the NFL Draft is here in Philadelphia. So, I got to put on my working shoes and get out in the middle of all of the insanity. JSC Radio Ep. 39 will go into more detail about my days at the Draft, but I will definitely say this: It was a really fun experience. Every time I get to cover something sports-related, it’s like going home. Getting to cover the Draft, on top of it adding another credential to the collection, is a chance for me to get back into the streets and into the swing of things. The atmosphere around the city the last week has been amazing. Yes, it’s a ton of people. Yes, it was hotter than a MFer by the time Thursday got here. But it was fun. It was cool to interact with other reporters and ask questions and not be anchored to a desk. So this week, JSC Radio Ep. 39 — which you can of course find on SoundcloudiTunesStitcher Radio, and Google Play — will talk about the fun of the draft, as well as get a couple of wisecracks in about the really dumb ass name WWE has given it’s new PPV, and throw some love out to my people at ESPN after the stunning blood-letting from last week. But before I end this thing, I want to drop a quick clarification on something from Ep. 38. Continue reading Updates: JSC Radio Ep. 39, The NFL Draft, and a last word on Ep. 38.
