JSC Radio Ep. 69: Panther Power

PHILADELPHIA (JSC) — The 69th (:::giggles:::) Episode of the People’s Podcast is here and, it’s the long awaited review of the hottest movie in years: Black Panther.

Those who know me know that I do NOT buy into hype. At all. Think of the most pumped up, hyped up things in music, or TV, or film over the last 15 years. There’s a high probability that I likely either never bothered to buy in or if I did, it was moths or even years later. I do this because, honestly, most of y’all have terrible taste and have a habit of calling everything a “classic” or “the future” or “the greatest” when it’s often total basura. Black Panther is NOT in that category. This movie is the truth.

black-panther-ticketsBlack Panther is the super hero flick that we have deserved. It’s the best Marvel movie of all time. It has grossed more than $1 billion worldwide. It is the best superhero film since The Dark Knight, one of the five best ever, and arguably the best “Black” movie of all time. Much like Get Out last year, this movie is a game changer, not just in terms of superhero movies, but in how we look at black cinema. Too often the last 60 years, black movies have been a zero sum, all-or-nothing game. It was either a serious biographical/documentary film, a stereotype-ridden action film, some stereotype-laden hyper-religious Tyler Perry flick, or some wild, wacky stereotype-filled comedy (or some combination of the latter three). Black Panther‘s a game changer, and I will talk about why this week. Plus a special shout out to Get Out, which we reviewed last year, that won an Academy Award for best Original…original…Screenplay.

JSC Radio Ep. 52: Las Vegas

PHILADELPHIA (JSC) —  So, it happened again. But, deep in your heart, you knew it would, right? On Monday morning, many of us woke up to our news alerts having gone crazy overnight (or, in my case, in real time) of the horrific massacre in Las Vegas.

This isn’t even the first episode that will address a horrific mass shooting — Episode 11 was the first. This one, however, is infuriating  for a different reason. A man was able to stockpile weapons, kill more people than died on one of the hijacked flights on Sept. 11, 2001, rack up a number of casualties that rivals that of the Oklahoma City bombing, and then kill himself before facing consequences. Yet, this still doesn’t seem to be enough to force any sort of change.

This week, a monologue on Las Vegas, gun control, and when will this country take responsibility for what it has wrought with its strident love of firearms.

JSC Radio Ep. 50: Stick To Sports

PHILADELPHIA (JSC) —  What’s good people! So, somehow, we made it to 50 Episodes — FIDDY! — of the People’s Podcast. But this one is going in a completely different direction from the rest of them.

For the first 49 shows, most of them have had some kind of intro or compelling hook or fun tag. This one’s a stone cold commentary that goes back to my roots. It’s threefold. I’m defending my friend (Jemele Hill). I’m defending my chosen profession (journalism) and I’m defending my people from the silly scourge of “#StickToSports.” The idea that “sports is an escape from everyday life” is a laughable lie. The thought that we have to “keep politics out of sports” rings hollow when most of the major sports stories of the last 100 years have been “political” in nature — Jackie Robinson, Muhammad Ali, John Carlos & Tommie Smith, The 1972 Munich Olympic massacre, The 1980 Miracle On Ice, etc. — and have shaped the face of sport around the world. To say otherwise is intellectually dishonest and disingenuous.

So here’s Episode 50. A commentary that refuses to #StickToSports.

JSC Radio Ep. 47: Statues of Limitations

NEW ORLEANS (JSC) —  What’s up everybody. The push to Episode 50 continues after a brief hiatus. First and foremost, my apologies for being gone the last few weeks. I was down in New Orleans for the National Association of Black Journalists Convention — it was an amazing success BTW — but after three weeks, the People’s Podcast is back in business and just in time for more of the fresh hell that has engulfed this country.

Episode 47 talks about the terrible incident in Charlottesville, and the fallout from it that includes the perversion of “Free Speech” and this country’s continued clutching onto the Confederacy — you know, the LOSING side in the Civil War. The latter being a subject that is sadly familiar to this site.
