JSC Radio Ep. 66: #RetroReview – 1998 Royal Rumble

PHILADELPHIA (JSC) —  What’s good people! After a month of delays, it’s that time again.

As you recall, back in November, Episode 56 was the last #RetroReview, which took a look back at the infamous 1997 Survivor Series. Nothing like looking at something you were into as a teenager as a 38-year-old! Also, as you know, there will be a quarterly show like this that reviews one of the classic “Big 4” WWF/WWE Pay-Per-Views: Royal Rumble, WrestleMania, SummerSlam, and Survivor Series (plus, later this year, there will be a review for the 20th Anniversary of the 1998 King of the Ring).

Previously Episode 28 looked at Ric Flair’s incredible win in the 1992 Royal Rumble and Episode 36 looked at my all-time favorite WrestleMania matches, and since Episode 48 looked at SummerSlam 1997, I had to go back 20 years for the next Retro Review: the 1998 Royal Rumble, the first major pay-per-view following the Montreal Screwjob.

The man with the garbage can on his head would be the biggest movie star on Earth 10 years later.

By January 1998, pro wrestling was still reeling from the fallout from Montreal. WCW was in the midst of completely botching the acquisition of Bret Hart, waiting more than a month to formally debut him on Nitro and eventually having him be apart of the completely messed-up finish to the Hulk Hogan-Sting match at Starrcade. Meanwhile, the WWF was navigating the residual PR nightmare. Vince McMahon was reluctantly embracing his dark side — which would eventually lead to him becoming “Mr. McMahon,” one of the all-time great heels — while ushering in the “Attitude Era.” At the same time, the company was trying to execute original plan that ran into a wild detour: Getting Stone Cold Steve Austin the World Title by WrestleMania 14. That’s what brings us to that night in San Jose, where the path to Austin officially being crowned “The Man” officially took off.

JSC Radio Ep. 56: #RetroReview – Survivor Series 1997

PHILADELPHIA (JSC) —  What’s good people!

As you recall, back in August, Episode 48 was the first official #RetroReviewwhich took a look back at SummerSlam 1997. Nothing like looking at something you were into as a teenager as a 37-year-old! Also, as you know, there will be a quarterly show like this that reviews one of the classic “Big 4” WWF/WWE Pay-Per-Views: Royal Rumble, WrestleMania, SummerSlam, and Survivor Series.

After Episode 28 looked at Ric Flair’s incredible win in the 1992 Royal Rumble and Episode 36 looked at my all-time favorite WrestleMania matches, it was time to go all in and review a full PPV. And since I looked at SummerSlam 1997, I had to go back 20 years for the next Retro Review and this one was a monumental one: Survivor Series 1997. Yep. THAT one. And, yes, I will talk all about…you know what.

JSC Radio Ep. 51: 10 Second Runoff

PHILADELPHIA (JSC) —  What Up Doe, y’all! It’s time once again for the Podcast that never ends. Episode 51 is here and it ended up being a follow up to the milestone 50th Episode.

This week, for the first time since Episode 23, I was forced to go right at the man in the Oval Office over his comments about NFL players protesting racial injustice during the national anthem, and it was…well, not easy. But I explain that during the show. Plus, I get on Lions fans. It’s something for everyone!

JSC Radio Ep. 49: Staff Infection

DETROIT (JSC) —  What’s good people! After the first ever #RetroReview took us on a trip down memory lane, we return to 2017 to another familiar scourge: The Detroit Lions. Yep. It’s that time of year again.

Followers of this show know that I have a love/hate relationship with this team. Including three different episodes last year where I laid out why I continue to watch them, apologized (sort of) after they shockingly won 9 of their first 13, then buried them when they did what the Lions do — embarrassingly lost their final three games then got bodied in Seattle in the playoffs. At the helm of this band of misfits is Matthew Stafford. The alleged “Greatest Quarterback in Lions History” despite never actually having won anything.

Well, the Lions made a guy with a career losing record — including 0-3 in the postseason and 5-46 against Winning Teams — the HIGHEST PAID PLAYER IN THE HISTORY OF THE NFL. You knew I was going to lose it. So here’s Episode 49.

JSC Radio Ep. 48: #RetroReview – SummerSlam 1997

PHILADELPHIA (JSC) —  What’s good people! After last week’s rather heavy episode, it was time to shake things up and change the vibe. As y’all know, this show doesn’t have a set format, per se. But this is definitely a big Pro Wrestling (not “Sports Entertainment”) Spot here at House JSC. And I decided a few weeks ago to try something different.

Episode 48 is the first official #RetroReview, which will be a quarterly show that reviews one of the classic “Big 4” WWF/WWE Pay-Per-Views: Royal Rumble, WrestleMania, SummerSlam, and Survivor Series. After Episode 28 looked at Ric Flair’s incredible win in the 1992 Royal Rumble and Episode 36 looked at my all-time favorite WrestleMania matches, it was time to go all in and review a full PPV, and no better place to start than going back 20 years to SummerSlam 1997, when things were definitely changing in the World Wrestling Federation and in the business in general.
